The temptation with an older installation is to replace everything and be done with it. That is usually not necessary. A dish is a shaped piece of metal — provided the reflector is not dented and the mount is solid, it will work as well as the day it went up. What ages is the equipment around it: the LNB at the front, the F-connectors, and the outer sheath of the coaxial cable where the sun has been on it for years.

So we test before we quote. A signal meter at the dish tells us what the reflector and LNB are actually delivering, and a second reading at the decoder tells us how much of that is being lost on the way. If the numbers are good at the dish and poor at the TV, the cable or a join is the problem and the dish stays. If they are poor at the dish, the LNB or the alignment is at fault, and both are small parts of the cost of a new installation.

Corroded connectors are the single most common find. Water works its way into an unsealed F-connector, the braid oxidises, and the signal margin drops just far enough that the picture holds up on a clear night and breaks apart in the rain. Resealing an outdoor join is a ten-minute job and it is often the entire fix.

Loose mounting is next. A bracket that was fine when it went in can work slightly loose over years of wind, and a dish that moves even a degree or two loses signal. We tighten what is there, or fit a new bracket where the steel has gone, which is a fraction of the price of a new dish and mast.

The third is line of sight. A tree that was a sapling when the dish went up can be over the signal path now. That does not always mean moving the dish — sometimes raising it, shifting it along the same wall, or trimming one branch is enough. We check from more than one position before recommending anything that involves new holes in your wall.

Call or WhatsApp us with your street and a short description of the problem. A photo of the dish from the ground, and one of the back of the decoder, tells us a surprising amount — often enough to arrive with the right LNB or connector already in the van rather than booking a second visit.
