The quick way to add a TV point is to run coax out of one room, along the outside wall, around a corner and back in. It works, and it looks exactly like what it is. Where a house has an accessible roof space, we would rather go up and across: the cable is out of the weather, out of the sun, and out of sight, and there is no line of clips marching across your face brick.

Where the roof is not an option, the run goes into trunking or conduit that follows an existing line of the building — under a gutter, behind a downpipe, along the top of a wall — rather than cutting diagonally across a clear face. It costs a little more in material and a little more time, and it is the difference between a tidy job and one you notice every time you pull into the driveway.

If the second screen is for the same household, Extra View is usually the answer: a second decoder linked to your existing DStv account, each able to watch a different channel. It needs an LNB with a spare output and its own cable back to the dish — not a splitter, which weakens the signal to both TVs and causes problems that are then blamed on the dish.

If the second dwelling is genuinely separate — a flatlet with its own tenant, for example — a separate decoder on its own account is usually the cleaner arrangement, because the viewing and the billing stay apart.
