DStv Installation in Comet, Boksburg
Comet sits around two and a half kilometres from the Boksburg town centre. A steady share of the calls we take from there are from people who have just moved in, found a dish already bolted to the wall, plugged a decoder into it and got nothing. An inherited dish is a good starting point far more often than people expect — but it needs testing rather than assuming.
The dish the previous tenant left behind
A dish that has been sitting unused is not necessarily a dead dish. Alignment does not drift on its own; unless something physically knocked it, it is probably still pointing where it was pointed. What usually fails in the meantime is everything softer than the reflector: a connector that has filled with water, a cable end that has been left dangling and corroded, or an LNB that gave up before the last occupant moved out — which may be exactly why they stopped using it.
We put a meter on it and find out in a few minutes. If it reads well, the job is a new connector, a tidy cable run to your TV and a decoder setup, which is considerably cheaper than a fresh installation. If it reads badly, at least you now know why, and you are not paying for a new dish you did not need.
If you rent, ask first
Anything that involves a new dish, a new bracket or a new hole through a wall is a change to someone else's property. Get the owner's or the agent's agreement in writing before the work is booked, even when it seems obvious that they would not mind. It takes one message and it avoids an argument about the deposit later.
Where permission for new drilling is not forthcoming, there are usually options that do not need it: reusing the existing dish and bracket, running the cable through an existing entry point, or a free-standing mount in a position with a clear view of the sky. Tell us what you are and are not allowed to do and we will plan the installation around it rather than around what would be easiest.
Decoders, accounts and what is not our department
We install and set up the equipment: the dish, the LNB, the cable, the decoder and the channel scan. The DStv account behind it — activating a smartcard, moving a subscription to a new address, clearing a payment issue — belongs to MultiChoice, and they are far quicker at it than we could be. If the screen is showing an account message such as E16, ring them on 011 289 2222 before you book us.
If you are not sure which kind of problem you have, send us a photo of what is on screen. Telling the two apart takes us a moment and saves you a call-out fee.
