The Three Separate Bills

3. The labour

Mounting the dish, aligning it, running and clipping the cable, fitting connectors, setting up the decoder and proving the signal. This is the part an installer actually prices, and it is the part that varies from house to house.

What Pushes the Labour Up

Every extra metre of coax is material, time and clips, and a longer run gives the signal further to travel. DStv says as much on its own installation page: "There may be added costs for additional travel, cabling or amplification required – all, which are for your account. Please confirm requirements with your installer before the installation." That last sentence is good advice. Ask before, not after.

How the dish has to be mounted

A wall bracket at a reachable height on a plain face brick wall is the easy case. A dish that has to go onto a roof, onto a high gable, or onto a pole because the obvious wall faces the wrong way is a different job with a different risk attached.

Work at height

Double-storey homes are common enough in parts of Boksburg that this comes up regularly. Anything needing work at height is quoted for that specific property rather than from a list, because the ladder work, not the dish, is what changes.

Extra TV points

Where the Hardware Price Comes From

DStv publishes what it recommends, and that recommendation affects your bill. For an Explora, DStv states: "The recommended installation is an 80cm satellite dish with a DStv Smart LNB." For a single-view HD decoder it is different: "the recommended installation for a single view decoder is a single LNB and an 80cm dish. You can select to do the installation with a DStv Smart LNB, however there will be an additional charge for this."

That is worth understanding before you compare two quotes. A cheaper number may simply be a plain LNB where the other includes a Smart LNB, which is a real difference in what you end up with rather than a difference in who is cheaper.

What You Should Get for the Price, Whoever Does It

If your decoder came with an installation voucher or on contract, DStv sets out what is included, and it is a reasonable benchmark for any installation. Its own list for an Explora or Ultra deal is: "Installation of your DStv Explora or Ultra decoder to two TV points by an accredited installer", "Activation of your DStv services", "Basic decoder functionality demonstration", "3-month warranty on workmanship" and "A 12-month warranty on equipment supplied".

Two things there are easy to skip over. The demonstration matters — someone should show you how the thing works before they drive off. And the two warranty periods are different lengths and cover different things: workmanship is the installation, equipment is the hardware.

How to Get an Accurate Number Without a Visit

Most of the cost drivers above are visible in a photograph. A picture of where the dish would go, a picture of the wall the cable has to cross, and a picture of the room the TV is in will usually get you a firm figure rather than a range. If there is already a dish up, a photo of it from the ground and one of the back of your decoder does the same job.

Send those through the quote form or on WhatsApp with your suburb and what you want done, and you will get a number you can plan around. If it turns out the job needs something the photos did not show, you hear that before any work starts, not on the invoice.
