DSTV Installer for Cinderella, Boksburg
Cinderella is about three and a half kilometres from the Boksburg town centre. A large share of what we are called out for there is not a new installation at all — it is a system that worked perfectly well until it did not, and an error code on screen that tells you something is wrong without telling you what. Working out which part of the chain has failed is most of the job, and it is the part that saves you money.
Why the error code is not the diagnosis
An E48 means the decoder is not receiving an adequate satellite signal. That is all it means. A dish nudged out of line, an LNB that has begun to fail, a connector full of water, a cable damaged where it crosses a wall, or a tree that has grown into the signal path all produce exactly the same message. Replacing parts one at a time until the picture returns is slow, and you end up paying for the parts that were fine.
So we work through the chain in order with a meter. A reading at the dish separates a dish-side problem from a cable-side one immediately. If it is good outside and poor at the TV, the fault is in between and the dish is innocent. If it is poor outside, the next question is whether it is the alignment, the LNB or something physically in the way — and each of those has a different fix and a different price.
The faults that come back
A picture that pixelates only in the evening, or only when it rains, is the classic symptom of a system running with almost no signal margin. Everything is technically connected; there is simply nothing spare, so the smallest extra loss tips it over. The cause is usually cumulative — a slightly stiff connector, a slightly tired LNB and a slightly off alignment, none of which would matter alone.
That is why we fix the cause rather than restoring the picture. Nudging a dish until the screen clears will get you through the evening and leave you calling somebody again in a month. Bringing the margin back up properly — resealing, replacing what is worn, re-peaking the alignment on a meter — is what makes the repair last through a season.
If the decoder itself has failed rather than the signal chain, we will tell you plainly. Some decoder faults are worth fixing and some are not, and we would rather you heard that before spending than after.
What to try before you call us
Two things are worth doing yourself. Check that the cable is screwed firmly into the back of the decoder, and switch the decoder off at the wall for ten seconds and back on. That clears a surprising number of faults. Never climb onto a roof to look at a dish — it is not worth it, and a dish that has moved needs a meter to put right anyway.
If the screen shows an account or smartcard message rather than a signal one, that is MultiChoice's side: 011 289 2222. Send us a photo of the screen if you are not sure which you are looking at.
